So it became known as salt water taffy because of its proximity to the ocean. 2: A candy maker named David Bradley built his candy shop too close to the edge of the boardwalk (in Altlantic City, New Jersey as well) and a storm came and the ocean rose and flooded the store. Later a girl came by to buy some taffy, the frustrated candy maker Bradley Sarcastically called it salt water taffy. Later his mother or sister came by an encouraged him to keep the name.
