Photosynthetic bacteria
It would be impossible for oxygen requiring organisms to exist before photosynthetic organisms because there was not oxygen in the atmosphere for these organisms to breathe. Photosynthetic organisms take carbon dioxide and water in and create oxygen as waste. Before these photosynthetic organisms existed there was not enough or any oxygen in the atmosphere for organisms requiring oxygen to survive.
Carbon Dioxide
Multicellular algae is crucial to the atmosphere, as it actually produces the greatest percentage of oxygen in our atmosphere, compared to other photosynthetic organisms.
Animal cells are Eukaryota, so they are not the first examples of cells. Archaebacteria, though they are possibly more closely related to eukaryote than bacteria are, do possess more of the hypothesis ancient methods of energy production (like thermoautotrophism and chemotherapeutic) which were prevalent before photosynthesis and aerobic respiration. Mitochondria are related to bacteria (specifically purple photosynthetic bacteria), and they perform aerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration cannot have been the original method for deriving energy, as it required oxygen - which was not abundant in the atmosphere until photosynthesis evolved. Chloroplasts are also related to bacteria (cyanobacteria) and they perform photosynthesis. It is currently believed that photosynthesis was not one of the original methods for deriving energy. So my answer would be archaebacteria.
Plants and other photosynthetic organisms such as algae take in ________ from the atmosphere and combine it with water and energy from the sun to form sugar.
Why do plants and other photosynthetic organisms need CO2 from the atmosphere?

The origin of photosynthetic prokaryotes caused an aerobic atmosphere during the history of the earth.
The origin of photosynthetic prokaryotes caused an aerobic atmosphere during the history of the earth.
cyanobacteria also called blue-green algae is thought to be one of the first ever photosynthetic organism...prior to the evolution of photosynthetic organisms theoxygen percentage of the atmosphere was 0% and as we all know without oxygen (O2), ozone(O3) cannot form, and without ozone there can be no atmosphere. Photosynthetic organisms allowed for the formation of oxygen and brought oxygen levels to the percentage it is today (20% a significant increase from 0%) as a result ozone was able to form and ultimately the atmosphere emerged.

Because there was almost no free oxygen for the plants to photosynthesize with.
