So much of Mycenaean culture was lost when their civilization collapsed that the time period afterward was known as a dark age. It wasn't until centuries later that Greeks began reclaiming parts of their ancient heritage and rose to power once more.
Around this time the great Roman Empire began to crumble, when barbarians finally did destroy Rome many great philosophies were lost. But the monastaries which were in secluded places kept copies of some Roman and Greek texts.
The Renaissance was the rediscovery of these Roman and Greek ways of thinking were God didn't choose your place in society(Feudal system) and everyone was equal.
