1 Samuel 5:1 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

In a synagogue, the ark is always placed at the front of the congregation. Because Jews pray facing Jerusalem, the ark is placed with its back toward Jerusalem and the opening facing the congregation.

What is the story about Dagon in the Bible?

Dagon is a Philistine 'fish god' mentioned in the Scripture and can be easily googled:1 Samuel 5:2-5New King James Version (NKJV)2When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon[a]and set it by Dagon.3And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of theLord. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again.4And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of theLord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its handswerebroken off on the threshold; only Dagon’storso[b]was left of it.5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.Footnotes:1 Samuel 5:2A Philistine idol1 Samuel 5:4Following Septuagint, Syriac, Targum, and Vulgate; Masoretic Text readsDagon.

The ark is at the front, facing the congregation, as hinted in the Zohar, on Numbers end of ch.10. the back of the ark faces Israel, so that the congregation will be facing Israel, as per 1 Kings ch.8 (Talmud, Berakhot 30a).

How did Samuel recapture the ark of the covenant and what verse of the bible is it in?

Read I Samuel Chapters five and six and you will see that Samuel did not recapture the ark of the covenant. The Philistines brought it back to the Israelites when God punished them for stealing it.

Was there a hemorrhoid god in the Bible?

In a way, yes there was.God punished the Philistines in I Samuel 5 and 6 with "emerods" [hemorrhoids; NIV:"tumors"] when they stole the Ark of the Covenant. The suffering of the Philistines went on for a period of time before they attributed their plague, pain and misery with the Ark. They decided to pass it off onto others of their clans but each one suffered in turn... and it was the consensus to return the Ark to the Israelites with a "tribute" attached: "images" [idols] of "five golden emerods" [hemorrhoids] and "five golden mice."To the Philistines, who were big on idol worship [i.e.; Dagon], these "images" were "god-like" idols. So, technically... to the suffering Philistines... there were "five golden hemorrhoid gods" in their repertoire of idols.
