Marked bills are U.S. currency police officers use when they try to buy illegal items, usually drugs. The police record the serial numbers of the bills before they use them, often by photocopying the bills. After the purchase, the police try to make a quick arrest. If the suspect is caught with the marked money on him, it makes for a strong case.

Abuse of police authority for personal organizational gains is called 'police corruption' which can be a variety of acts such as police harassing an innocent person with a 'look the other way' attitude when a person even commits a minor violation of the law; police sticking together and covering up for one of their own kind; hiding evidence or overlooking a crime in a police officer's family; planting drugs on an innocent person (generally carried out by two police officers if they do not happen to like a certain person); police involved in drug trafficking; not reading the person their rights before arrest; not providing a lawyer to be present before questioning; sexual harassment of a female police officer or any woman; rape (including blackmailing prostitutes ... if the prostitute provides them with a sexual favor then the police will not arrest her); accepting money in exchange for police services or protection; embezzlement; fraud; extortion and felony crimes. Police corruption also happens in prisons and jails. A person who is innocent and feels they are harassed by the police can form a complaint to the Department of Justice.
