France used Paris as it's meridian; in fact France continued to use Paris for many years after the rest of the world had agreed to use Greenwich.

Why is London on the Prime Meridian?

The Prime Meridian runs through London because it was established by Sir George Airy. The choice of location for a prime meridian is entirely arbitrary, so a British scientist chose a line passing through the astronomical observatory at Greenwich in London.

Does the equator run through Greenwich England?

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich has a line on the ground showing the exact location of the Prime Meridian. The astronomical Prime Meridian is defined by this reference. Due to changes in the way the Prime Meridian is defined, the Prime Meridian of modern reference systems is 102.5 metres east of the Greenwich astronomical meridian represented by the stainless steel strip.

Why prime meridian called Greenwich?

The Prime Meridian based on Greenwich, England, is at 0 degrees longitude and all other meridians are "X" degrees east or west of it. The Prime Meridian was established for navigation and is the basis on which International time is kept. The International Date line is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Prime Meridian and is the point which seperates yesterday from today. The line was drawn by international agreement, and was skillfully drawn so as not to cross any land to keep all areas of a country in the same day (and time zone). There are few bends and kinks in the International Date line to achieve this, but if it was a straight line, it would generally be at 180 degrees E or W longitude. The Prime Meridian and the International Date Line are the two lines that separate the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Why does the prime meridian pass through Greenwich England?

Until Greenwich was established as the site of the Prime Meridian, the maps and charts of the various countries and peoples would reckon longitude from the meridian of some major place of their own. It would be London for the English sailors, but for the French, it would be Paris and for the Italians, Rome or Genoa or Venice. At the time that cartographers and navigators were feeling the need for a single international standard, Britannia was definitely ruling the waves and leading the world in the sciences of exploration. The Royal Observatory, in an old deer park above the town of Greenwich, seemed the fitting place for the Prime Meridian.

Why 82 degree 30'E has been selected as the standard meridian of India with an odd value?

Meridians are measured in degrees and fractions of degrees. Any line joining the two poles directly is a meridian and may have any value up to 180 degrees east or west. The standard meridian in India was chosen for time purposes within the country, as measured from the prime meridian.

What is the function of the prime meridian?

The prime meridian is the arbitrary zero (0) line of longitude. It extends from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England. It divides the Earth's surface into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The zero line of latitude is a given, in the form of the equator. But for longitude, the line was agreed on at an international conference at Washington DC in 1884. The conference chose a line that had been established in 1851, and had become widely accepted internationally. France, however, continued to base its longitude on the Paris meridian until 1914, and still does on some maps.It is the line of longitude (running North-South) at which the longitude is arbitrarily defined as 0° (zero degrees) longitude. It runs through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich and GMT is based from this meridian. The Prime Meridian (zero degrees) is a line of Longitude, that passes from the North to South Pole, passing through the Greenwich Observatory, London, UK. All other meridians (lines of longitudes) take their degrees to West and East of the Prime Meridian. It is important in navigation, and along with lines of latitude, helps to pin-point accurately any spot on the Earth's surface.the prime meridian is at 0 degree.longitudes are defined on prime meridian. prime meridian also divides the sphere, e.g. the Earth, into two hemispheres.

What causes variation in time at different places on the earth?

there is a time difference between all the parts of the world as the sun revolves fromwest and that is why the time is ahead in the east and behind in the west . if a meridian passes through a place , all the places that come in the path of that meridian have the same time .the time difference is not much in between the meridian s . these regions are known as TIME ZONES .a time selected for a particular place at noon is known as that pace's LOCAL MEAN TIME
