First understand that the Greeks, ancient ones anyone, would see things in the world that they didn't understand, so to explain them so they made sense, they would create a story about the Gods/Goddesses. For instance, The sun moved across the sky everyday, so even though they could not see a God on a chariot, they created the belief that Helios pulled the sun across the sky and since that was impossible for a mere mortal, he must have been a God. As time went on, the stories became a part of their culture and they revered them and even feared them. Greek (and Roman) Gods were jealous Gods full of vengence and they would not hesitate to punish anyone who displeased them, so Greeks worshiped them with fear in their hearts that if they didn't they would be punished. Think of a dog that is beaten by his master everyday, yet everyday the dog comes back to the master, tail wagging. He fears the master because he cowers when the master is angry, but he keeps coming back because he knows the master also takes care of him. ps-I do not condone animal abuse, I abhore it!
