The Battle of Brandywine occurred during the American Revolution on September 11, 1777 around Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, the American's led by George Washington with an army 14, 600 strong up against William Howe's 15,500. Casualties on the American side were 200 killed 750 wounded whereas the British suffered 89 killed and 488 wounded. George Washington lost this battle resulting in Philadelphia being left undefended and was eventually captured on September 26, 1777. The Battle of Germantown occurred on October 4, 1777 near Germantown, Pennsylvania. The American force under George Washington and Nathanial Greene was 11,000 strong. The British Force under William Howe, Charles Cornwallis and Wilhelm Von Knyphausen was 9,000 strong. American casualties numbered at 152 killed, 521 wounded and over 400 captured compared to the British causalities of 70 killed 420-450 wounded and 14 captured. Once again the British won this battle and it ensured that Philadelphia would remain in British hands for the winter of 1777-1778.
