When the sun rises in the east, the shadows point west, at mid-day when the sun is directly overhead there is no shadow, when the sun passes the mid-point in the sky, the shadows then point to the east.

... they become smaller to a minimum at midday!

___________________________

At dawn, shadows are very long. As the morning progresses, the shadows get shorter and shorter. At a time called "Local Apparent Noon", the Sun passes your longitude and the shadows are at their shortest point. After that, the shadows get longer and longer until sunset.

A couple of interesting "Boy Scout" type points here.

1. If you drive a stick into the ground, you can mark the tip of the shadow of the stick on the ground. If you do this several times, you can draw a line from point to point. This line is exactly east-west.

2. When the shadow of the stick is at its shortest, the line from stick to shadow is north-south. Outside the tropics, the line points north in the northern hemisphere and south in the southern hemisphere. Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, you'll need to know the date in order to know whether the shadow is north or south.

3. Because we use standardized time zones, "Local Apparent Noon" probably is NOT noon according to your watch. But if you are near the center of your time zone, it's probably not too far off. Except for Daylight Savings Time; during daylight time, Local Apparent Noon is actually closer to 1 PM on your watch.

This is probably how the Egyptians figured out the cardinal directions when they were laying out the pyramids.

That is due to the fact that the Earth rotates towards the East.

Planet Earth rotating on its axis in an anti-clockwise direction, causing the east to see dawn before west.
Because the earth spins in space (like a ball) toward that direction. Put a dot on a tennis ball and spin it anti-clockwise, relative to the room light and you will see the dot go into shade (night) and then light (day). The dot is you; the sun doesn't move relative to you -- you are doing the moving.

The sun rises in the east is because the earth rotates in a counterclockwise direction, which means it rotates from west to east - causing the sun to rise earlier in the east and later in the west.

Because (viewed from above) the Earth revolves in an anti-clockwise direction.

_________________________________________________________________

In the most strict and technical sense, the Sun does not rise or set at all. The terms rise and set stem from a time when most people believed that the Earth was stationary at the center of the universe, and everything moved around us.

Of course, we now know that the rising and setting of the Sun and stars is due to Earth's rotation on its own spin axis. Relative to we here on Earth, the Sun hardly moves at all. We know that very few things really move around "us." Still, it is convenient to describe the things we see with traditional language.

Regarding East and West, they are conventions assigned arbitrarily, like the positive and negative in electricity. In astronomy, the spins of all the planets are called prograde or retrograde, also arbitrary assignments. 6 of the 8 planets spin on their axes in the same way, and we called it prograde. The other two, Venus and Uranus, spin in the opposite direction, and we called it retrograde. Up to the American is the same direction as down to the Chinese.

The Sun rises and sets once per day due to the spin of the Earth on its axis, east or west regarded as you may please.

The Sun doesn't move much, and the Moon takes a month to go around the Earth once. So the dizzying change in the night or day sky is caused by the Earth itself spinning like a carousel, from west to east.

In fact, as seen from a location high above the north pole, nearly everything in our solar system spins or orbits or turns counter-clockwise. There are very few exceptions.

That may be considered an apparent motion - since it is actually caused by Earth's rotation.

Yes. Even in places where the sun stays up or stays down for months at a time,

whenever it does rise or set, it rises in the east and sets in the west.

Kind of motion?

In Physics, the first kind of motion is called the rotational motion. This rotation occurs around a fixed axis. Transitional motion, on the other hand, is the rotation that occurs along a linear axis. Lastly, the oscillatory motion is a repetitive type of motion and rises and falls between two locations.
