Christopher Columbus was known as the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.
Christopher Columbus struck a deal with Spanish crown to help him finance his quest. In return for his discoveries and services to crown, he was given the title of Admiral of Ocean Sea and was made Viceroy of Indies.
Upon returning from his first voyage in 1493, Christopher Columbus was given the title "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" by the Spanish Crown. This title recognized his role in discovering the New World and his achievements in maritime exploration. Additionally, he was granted the noble title of "Viceroy" and "Governor" of the lands he claimed for Spain.
Columbus made a contract with the Spanish crown. He didn’t come back with much gold and on his death was sick and broke. His son’s sued the crown concerning them not meeting the agreements they made with their father.
