The proper term for all juvenile insects is "larva" (pl=larvae).

However, one may refer to insects that do not metamorphose (e.g. true bugs, dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, mayflies, grasshoppers, mantids, walking sticks, roaches, to name a few) as "nymph".

Each species of insect may have between 3 to 7 (or more) larval stages which are called instars. You wouldn't say instar if you didn't know instar it is, e.g. "first instar", "second instar", etc.- you would just say "nymph" or "larva".

Juvenile Spiders and ticks can be called larvae or nymphs and these are also broken down into instars.

Juvenile forms of insects that do metamorphose (beetles, moths/butterflies, wasps/bees/ants, and flies) are called "larvae" and may not be called nymphs. An instar from any of these orders may also be called a "Stadium (pl-Stadia)" (e.g. first larval stadium, etc.)

However, culture has given rise to some other more loose terms for these types of larvae. For instance, beetle larvae are also called "grubs", fly larvae are also called "maggots", butterflies and moths are also called "caterpillars". Fly fishermen have the greatest variety of nonscientific names for larval insects - so for more find one and ask him/her.
