Nobody has suggested that the whole region is a ( Black Hole) or for that matter a life-rejecting natural vacuum chamber- which would bar all life. there are islands that have Palm trees, the usual aquatic fauna- some beautiful birds like Flamingos, and according to some accounts- may harbor some extinct reptiles better known as Dinosaurs. for some odd reason they removed the ENTIRE Ornithology department- with some excellent mounted fossils of huge Flightless Birds, by the way from that AMNH some years ago and this was a most popular exhibit, particularily with kids, practically every type of bird was present in mounted specimens.
There really is nothing wrong there; it is a made-up mystery. Just something to sell books and papers with. Given the amount of traffic, the weather and all, you are no more likely to vanish there than anywhere else.
