The smell is caused by the fact that the water in the trap has dried out. All you need to do is pour some water down the drain periodically to prime the trap. Simply do this every time you smell sour gas. Alternately, you can pour some mineral oil down the drain (perhaps a pint or so) and leave it alone. This will keep it permanently sealed as long as you don't use flush it out with more water.
