Some of the early Church Fathers compared the Church (again, the gathering of believers) to Noah's Ark. Once inside you were well fed, warm, and strengthen by others who were also there. Whereas outside the safety and homeliness of the Ark, there's rain, darkness, floods, and eventually death.
