It means you were very nice to the small bird (but not very nice to the hawk). It means you side with the underdog, you have compassion, you're not apathetic to the violence that goes on in the animal world. Could it be symbolic? I think symbolism is all in our heads, rather than a "message". But one could think of it as a higher power stepping in and reversing roles so that the prey can live and the predator runs away. Maybe it means you're about to find religion and safety, salvation and peace with it.
