Cincinnati was known as 'pork-opolis' in the 1800's because of its production of sausage. Cincinnati houses the oldest Baseball team the Cincinnati Reds or the Cincinnati Redlegs as they were originally called.
Cincinnati was once known as Porkopolis due to its being a major market for the areas pig farmers to send the pork up and down the river to other destinations. It is why we today have the Flying Pig marathon and there are statues of flying pigs at our Ohio river park known as Yeatman's Cove. This area is home to the love of pigs, frogs and tigers, all references to unofficial city mascots.
