Sometimes WoW realms/servers are down for maintenance. Best thing to do is wait or go on the WoW forums and read about the server status.
In the strictest legal terms, WoW servers are not legal, since they require a (basically) hijacked version of the official server software to run, which is not the property of the people running the servers.

WoW is an MMORPG. there is no community site. if you have an account, then when you log in, you will be given a list of servers to connect to.
Private servers in WoW are servers that are not connected to the official servers in any way. They basically are hacked copies of the WoW servers. Do not support them. - I support the private servers, first of all they are free, second of all they are different than the actual game and have different rules, monsters, and areas, third of all they all aren't copies. I support the private servers. - 1. Yes, they are free. But you do not have the quality GM's that the official servers have. GM's on private servers are not bound by any rules. they do what they want when they want. 2. you might have different models or what not, but if they are not the same as the official servers, then you are not playing the game. 3. If you are not connected with the official servers, they ARE copies.
If it is a Tuesday, then the servers are probably down for maintenance. They usually go down every Tuesday. Apart from that, there might be a problem with your account. Call Blizzard Customer service and see if they can help you.
There are currently an unknown number of WOW servers used to keep the game running. In the US, there are currently 236 realms divided into 13 battle groups with each battle group working as a server thereby making into 13 servers in the US.
