Singh is an economist and held the positions of Governor of the Reserve Bank and Minister of Finance before becoming the Prime Minister. In the last 20 years, he has helped India undergo globalization, opening up the Indian economy to foreign investment, and making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world after Singapore and Taiwan, but notably ahead of China (as measured by GDP growth rate). Singh is considered the most popular Prime Minister since Nehru, and was the first since Nehru to be re-elected as Prime Minister after a full five year term.
