Well, some women like to hear that they're beautiful, pretty, etc. Any compliment on their looks is great with them. Being specific is a little better, i.e. "You look amazing in that dress". Even better, "You look fantastic today", spoken when she's really not wearing anything special and not "dolled up".
Women also love most compliments that have to do with something OTHER than their looks. "I can't believe how funny you are - you have the best sense of humor." "It's a good thing you're ridiculously smart, because we'd still be stuck in that meeting if it weren't for you." Etc., so on and so forth.
But honestly, here's the thing. Men want to know what women want. They're always asking the same question... "What do women want?"... "What does my wife want from me?".... "How can I make her happy?"
The answer is really very simple. Women thrive on being/feeling needed. Therefore, what women crave to hear are things like, "I don't know what I'd do without you".... "I couldn't live without you".... "I'd be such a mess without you".... "I'd go crazy if I ever lost you"... etc. Those statements mean more than any "You're so beautiful" could ever mean.
However, these are things that are meant to be said once you've been with someone for a while. If someone started saying these types of things right when they first started dating someone, the other person is likely to run away, as fast as possible. Saying, "I can't live without you" to someone you've only been on a couple of dates with just screams desperate or crazy or both.
So what do you say when you HAVE just started dating someone and you can't say the heavy things yet? You say things that don't specify one single thing that you like about a person, but rather things that refer to the whole person in general. In other words, things like, "I can't wait to see you tonight"... "I was supposed to watch the game with my buddies today, but I blew that off so I could spend time with you"... "I had so much fun with you last weekend"... "I'm so glad I met you".... etc.
Make it about HER, not about one or two of her features, such as her beauty, etc.

Well, usually if a guy compliments you when he's in front of is buddys it means he is most likely interested in you because guys are usually never giving girls compliments in front of his buddys if he don't like them

Some people can take compliments if the are confident in themselves and others find it difficult. The compliments should come from the heart and if they do just speak your mind. Too often people never give enough compliments to others and a good compliment can recharge the batteries of many people.
