Rome gained control over much of central southern Italy with the three Samnite Wars (343-341 BC, 326-304 BC and 298-290 BC) against the Samnites who lived to the south of Rome. The second of these wars became a contest between the two most powerful peoples in the region over the control of this area.
Rome extended her control over southern Italy as a result of the Pyrrhic War (280-275 BC). Pyrrhus, the king of the Greek kingdom of Epirus landed in Italy, ostensibly to defend the Greek city of Tarentum in southern Italy, but his true intention was to take over the south of the peninsula. He fought the Romans but lost.
Rome decided to take control over Gallia Cisalpina (much of northern Italy) because the Gauls who lived there wanted to attack Rome. In 225 BC, they hired a large mercenary force from the Gaesatae (Gauls who lived in the Rhone Valley, in today's France), overrun Etruria and prepared to march on Rome. They defeated the Romans at the Battle of Fraesulae, but were routed at the Battle of Telamon, one of the biggest battles in antiquity. The Romans rejected a peace proposal by one of these Gallic groups, the Insubres, invaded their territory and besieged one of their main fortresses at Acerrae. To try to relieve this siege the Insubres hired Gaesatae mercenaries and attacked Clastidium. However, the Romans redeployed only part of their army and defeated the Insubres at the Battle of Clastidium (222 BC), and in the meantime also took Acerrae. The king of the Insubres was killed at Clastidium. The victories paved the way to the Insubre capital (Mediolanum), which the Romans took. The Insubres surrendered, ending the danger of Gallic attacks on Rome.
