Although, Australia became a country in its own right in 1901 the Boer War (1899-1902) was still a war in which Australians fought under British command. However, there were some military commanders who were Australian. The relationship between Australia and Britain was still strong after the Boer War. As a result the colonies had their own armies such as the Queensland Mounted Infantry and the NSW Lancers. But by the end of the Boer War the troops were no longer fighting on behalf of their state but together as Australians. Towards the end of the war, it became deeply unpopular in Australia as many wanted their men to come home and let the British fight for themselves. But public support was still strong for continued involvement with Britain after the war had ended.

If good faith efforts had been employed, and both sides had just sat down, expressed their grievances, and come up with solutions, the outcome would have been different.
