The Dardanelles Straits connect the Black and Mediterranean seas. During World War I, it was controlled by the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers. Unfortunately, it was the only way to get supplies to Russia. Britain needed the straits to help its ally.
To get there by sea you'd have to go West to the English Channel and then follow the coast of France, Spain and Portugal to Gibraltar. Once you have gone through the strait of Gibraltar you will be in the Mediterranean Sea. Then you head East to the Aegean sea, which is separated from the Black sea by the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits. A direct land route would take you South-east through Eastern Europe
