The actual time in combat varied from place to place, but once someone enlisted and was shipped out to fight in the war, they stayed in the war till they were injured too badly to return to battle or till the war was over.

My father served from beginning to end in WWII, but he wasn't in combat much. I expect that was a typical experience for most soldiers. No soldier in any war is 'in combat' all the time, i.e. actually fighting the enemy.
