First, make certain that you have a safe place to run away TO - be sure you have money to pay for your rent and food, or a safe adult who will take care of you. Kids who just run away without a plan usually end up becoming drug addicts and prostitutes (and yes, I am talking about girls and boys both) because criminals take advantage of them since they have not planned how to survive. Once you have a good plan, simply write a letter - tell whyyou are leaving and where you are going. Be sure that you let them know you are mature enough to plan ahead and have a job or a responsible adult who is going to take care of you. Remember that if you are not legally an adult, your parents are legally responsible for you, and can make you return if you just run off. If you are being abused by a parent, you should contact the people at a shelter like Miracle Hill or your local church - they will make sure you have a safe place to stay and food and clothing. If you are just mad at your parents, think about just going to stay with a friend for awhile to cool off, instead of running away. Running away is a big step, and you have to be adult enough to take care of yourself instead of letting the adults do all that.

You can start out by making a list of things that made you think running away was a good choice, then make those into sentences and pretend you're talking to the people you're writing to. Tell them what job you have to support yourself now that you're on your own, or who you are staying with to support you until you can find work. Tell them what you are doing to survive and stay healthy. Tell them your feelings and thoughts.
