Social Work (MSW) or Psychology. I would suggest social work, which provides much more practical information for people who are going to work in the real world, as opposed to academia. It also provides a broader base of information if you want to branch out into other areas beside counseling, such as case management or family services.

Is there an associated degree for therapists?

It depends on what type of therapist you are referring to. There are such careers as Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist Assistant, etc. at the associate level. Then there are others such as therapists within the field of mental health that are at the masters and more often the doctorate level.

How many years of schooling do you need to become a therapist?

There are basically 2 educational levels to become a therapist. A masters and doctorate level with the master taking 1 to 2 years after the bachelors degree and the doctorate an additional 2 to 3 years after that. With a masters you can become a licensed mental health counselor or marriage and family therapist or social worker but you have to carefully examine the licensure requirements in the profession you want to pursue and make sure you are taking a program and courses that will get you what you want.

What is Education required for mental health and substance abuse social worker?

A social worker is someone that has a Social Work degree and licensure as a social worker. This would require either a BSW (bachelors of social work), an MSW (masters), or a doctoral level social work degree. If you are simply wanting to work with the mentally ill and/or addicts, it really depends on what type of employment you are looking for. It is possible to get a position working as a mental health tech / psych tech at a group home or inpatient hospital with just a HS diploma. Case management positions typically require a bachelor's degree with a preference for people with a degree in social work, human services, or a related field. If you are wanting to work as a therapist, you will need a masters level degree. If you are wanting to be an addictions counselor, having a masters degree would definitely help, but you can get a job doing that with a lower level degree.
