According to Protestant denominations, a person should confess to God and to no other person, because only God has the power to forgive sin. Catholicism, Copts, Eastern Orthodoxy and Anglicans also believe that only God can forgive sin, but that He has shared that authority with the Church. This position is based on two passages from Scripture: John 20:22,23 where Jesus says: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins they are retained." James 5:13-16 "Is there anyone sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church. They will pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. This prayer, uttered in faith, will saved the one who is ill, and the Lord will restore him to health. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, declare your sins to one another, that you may find healing." For Christians, sin hurts the relationship with God, with others and with oneself; therefore, there needs to be a healing in each of these areas. There is also needs for reconciliation with the Body of Christ, the Christian Community, which has been hurt by a person's sinful action. For Catholicism and Orthodoxy, this comes when the penitent celebrates the sacrament of Reconciliation with a priest. The priest offers forgiveness in God's Name. God's forgiveness is considered to be constant and without condition; it does not even depend on a person being contrite Finally, Christians believe there needs to be a healing on the part of the person who, by sinning, has wounded himself/herself in some way. In other words, the person has to forgive himself/herself for what has been done, and take steps towards living a healthier spiritual life.
