The Pharaoh was the supreme ruler of Egypt and not only in name: he wielded absolute power over his subjects and decided over life and death. He was also the supreme commander of the army and often led his armies into war himself. He was seen by his people (and by himself) as a god - an incarnation of the god Horus - and a descendant of the gods and the most important figure to link the world of the gods to the world of the Egyptian people.
