The entire lighting system is grounded to the frame of the vehicle. If the ground wire is not connected properly, or if it is corroded the lights will not work.

If you have no brake lights or tail lights then you've probably got an electrical problem. Check the fuses first and see if you have one or more blown.
Then go to a professional and have them look at it. Or your headlights and taillights light bulb thing is blown out. Either way you should go to a professional or have them come to you and DON'T DRIVE YOUR CAR!:0)
Your dashboard lights suddenly not working is almost always your indication that your taillights are out. If the fuse for your taillights is blown and you replace it, your dash lights should be fine.
