Unless you are having a specific drivability problem, ie. low fuel mileage, engine knock, no power, or the like, a tune on any modern car is a pretty straight forward parts replacement. Spark plugs, cap, rotor, and plug wires. The computer takes care of the timing and the fuel/air mix.
It is possible that the 1997 Mercury Villager simply needs a tune up. New spark plugs and wires may make a great difference.

Take it back to who tuned it up, ask them if they cleaned the throttle body. Ask then if they gapped the plugs before they put them in. Did they put the sparkplug wires back on tight?
