A major Turkish defeat in 1571 was the naval battle of Lepanto, which occurred of the coast of Greece, where the Holy League forces, under Don John of Austria, defeated the Ottoman forces under Ali Pasha. The Turks lost 3/4 of their entire naval forces, and 25,000+ men.

The Battle of Lepanto in 1571 spelled defeat for the Ottoman Navy inside the Gulf of Corinth (specifically the part of the Gulf of Corinth also termed the Gulf of Patras), in what is now Greek waters. Unfortunately, the Christian Holy League could not preserve an alliance after the battle, which meant that the victory had no additional benefits for the Christians then holding off the Ottoman advance.
