St. Pierre and Miquelon are two islands south of Newfoundland that remain in French hands. France originally controlled much of Canada. When it was defeated by Britain in 1763, France was allowed to keep these two islands as well as some fishing rights. At the time, the region where the islands are located (the Grand Banks, off the southern coast of Newfoundland and east of Nova Scotia) was a rich fishing ground, abundant with cod, mackerel, tuna, halibut, swordfish, and other species. St. Pierre and Miquelon are attractive to tourists and are bases for French fishers.
