My own opinion is that the Civil War was a result of the south's dependence on slaves to keep their economy on par with the north. In addition I believe that the question of slavery may have been viewed by northern aristocracy as a way to exert control over the south. I have ony just begun reading this book but I am sure the answer can be found within it's pages. Pick up a copy of "The People's History Of The United States" by Zinn
