If going by all regions of Europe, Switzerland would be placed in neither Southern or Northern Europe; it would be placed in Central Europe simply based on its location. However, if all European countries had to be placed as either being in Northern or Southern Europe (say, splitting Europe in "half"), Switzerland would be part of Northern Europe. Culturally and historically, Switzerland is more related to Northern Europe. The Alps are one of the cutoff lines between the north and south of Europe, and has historically acted as a separator between Northern and Southern Europe. Since Switzerland is on the northern side of the Alps, it has been open more to Northern European culture than Southern European.

It is sometims considered as central Europe, but in reality it is quite clearly in the northern half of Europe and in the same time in the western half of Europe. Then, depending of the context it can be seen as either a northern European country, western European country or central European country. Northern Germany, that lies along the north sea and Baltic sea is clearly part of northern Europe; when southern Germany, that borders Austria, switzerland and the Alps is clearly part of central Europe; while regions along the rhine, in western Germany, along Belgium or northern France are clearly part of western Europe.
