Rumor has it that while under construction the Navy ran short on funds. As a result the boilers came from a salvaged ship resulting in years of engineering problems and problems with retention of qualified engineering personnel. The official log confirms all of the problems. It even states that it took all they could do just to keep the ship moving. As a crew member from 1968 to 1970 I experienced these things myself. I also witnessed a Mutiny dock side in Charleston in 1970 by the Engineering Dept. that kept the "mac" from going to Sea. The mutiny was a result of 3 years of empty promises to correct the problems. The official record states the "Mac" never missed a mission, this is an official cover up. Officers more concerned with their careers than the safety of the crew or the ship got lucky no one was killed. I hope they sleep well at night. I would be happy to hear from anyone with any additional information. I find it very telling that someone asks this question about the boilers
