Under Roman law, a dictator was appointed for six months. However this appointment could be extended by vote of the senate. In the case of Julius Caesar it was extended for ten years and then extended for life.

The term of office of a dictator in the Roman Republic was six months. Usually he resigned as soon as the mandate for which he was appointed was accomplished. The only exception to this were Sulla, who was given an indeterminate term and resigned after one year, and Julius Caesar, who was appointed for an indeterminate period, then for ten years and lastly for life.
