My understanding is that the vast majority of "universities" offering degrees based on "life experience" are worthless diploma mills.

You give them money, write a few middle-school-level essays to make it look like you did some kind of work for your degree, and they give you a "degree" that isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

If you want to be a lawyer in most states, you need to go to an ABA accredited law school, in order to take the bar exam.

Most diploma mills (pretty much any online "university" offering "life experience" degrees, with no tests or courses) give you degrees that are absolutely worthless in pursuing employment, or other higher education. In many states, it's actually a crime to use a degree from an unaccredited university when applying for a job.

In short, go to a real university if you're serious about getting an education.

Do online graduate schools exist in real life?

The answer is YES, but there are NO legitimate degrees that can be earned entirely through life experience. You may have seen advertisements such as get a degree entirely from your life experience or earn a degree with zero effort or without any coursework; it most probably be a scam than a legitimate degree program. You should avoid yourself from getting a degree in this way, because it will not help in your future career. Most reputable colleges and universities do allow life experience to be counted for credit so that you may waive some subjects to save cost and time in completing a degree program, but you definitely won'tt be able to earn a legitimate degree solely based on life experience.

The Value of a Life-Experience College Degree?

As many people across the United States pursue higher education, employers have made significant changes to hiring practices. With employment in the United States hovering around 9% as of 2011, many employers are turning away candidates with only a high school GED. It can be impossible for someone without a college degree to earn higher than minimum wage in today's modern economy. A life-experience college degree can be a valuable tool for many individuals and job candidates. A life-experience degree is based on a wide variety of educational criteria -- an education based on real-life experiences. A licensed counselor will interview a degree candidate to determine what type of degree an individual is qualified for. While a degree is always valuable on paper, real-life experience is often more valuable to employers. Without a degree, it can be impossible to get an initial interview for a job position. Many college subjects aren't relevant to a career, but are still required to receive a traditional degree. A life-experience degree in marketing would be based on the work and experience history of a degree candidate. Previous work experience in advertising, media, and mass communications can be used to grant a degree for qualified candidates. A degree in criminal justice can be based off a variety of life experiences. Previous work in law enforcement, retail asset protection, and volunteer work can be a great way to receive a criminal justice degree. There are many types of experience that be applied towards a degree. Hobbies, volunteer work, and other interests can help a licensed counselor find the degree program that is right for an individual. There are no required classes for a life-experience college degree. It can be time-consuming and expensive to pursue a traditional college degree -- juggling work, home, and school commitments can be impossible for many individuals. By choosing to pursue a college degree based on life experience, it's possible to provide oneself the tools to find a new career. Many life-experience college degrees can be completed in only a few weeks, based on experience and previous qualifications.
