Best Answer

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer)

It was the first digital computer developed at University of Pennsylvania in the 1940s by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert. It was designed for the Army for advanced calculations at high speeds and to allow charting of ballistic trajectories for artillery ammunition. By the time it was invented WWII was over and was instead used for calculations for the atomic bomb, and other calculations for advancing war technology.

For calculation of Firing Tables for the thousands of new artillery pieces being introduced into the U.S. Army during WW2. However it was not finished until after the end of the war, so it made no contribution to the war effort. Following the war however it was used for the intended purpose and produced many sets of firing tables.

Before ENIAC many firing tables contained so many errors that the tables never got used because the soldiers did not trust them.

Today firing tables are not even used, a small embedded computer thousands of times more powerful than ENIAC computes a firing solution in realtime with far greater accuracy than could even have been considered on ENIAC.

ENIAC was designed to compute firing tables for new artillery pieces. However its first real calculation, in December 1945 through January 1946, was to simulate Edward Teller's Classical Super hydrogen bomb design for Los Alamos; proving that it could not work. After being moved to the BRL at Aberdeen Proving Grounds later in 1946 it was finally used for its original intended purpose, for many years.

How many transistors did the ENIAC have?

Eniac didn't have any transistors. It was built with 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, and a whole host of other components. But no transistors. The first transistor was created in November, 1947, almost two years after Eniac was completed.

How many ENISC computer have when it was first built?

Only one ENIAC was ever built. Its mechanism of programming was too inefficient and error prone.

The eniac was built to be used during what?

ENIAC was designed and built in WW2 for the following purposes:Calculate new firing tables for existing artillery pieces in use where existing tables were found inadequateCalculate firing tables for new artillery piecesIt had to be able to do this much faster than the existing human computers then used for these tasks. However ENIAC was not operational until after the end of the war.

How much was the eniac computer sold?

ENIAC was never sold, it was built to order on a cost plus wartime Army contract. The original estimated cost to build ENIAC in the contract was roughly $50,000, however by the time it was finished the final cost was over $500,000. About a year after completion, ENIAC was dissembled and shipped to the BRL Aberdeen where it was used for about a decade. The Army owned it from the day the contract was signed until it was retired.
