This might be possible, yes. Much of this depends upon the graphics chipset and driver in use on your laptop. Many laptop graphics cards will allow you to use the laptop display panel as well as an external monitor at the same time. You may need to update your video drivers if you do not see the options to do that when you look at your display settings.
WIndows should recognize that another external monitor is attached. IF will run it with a generic driver which may not be the most suitable. IF you have the driver install it.
to manipulate it, go to COntrol Panel, Personalize, Display settings adn click accordingly.

note that you can adjust the positioning fo the 2nd monitor in relation of the ist monitor or notebook. Choose extended if you want to run separate progams or applications on the second monitor.
Sometimes when the NB is config. as such, and after disconnecting it, Windoes ( esp on XP), it still thinks that the second monitor is still connected. WHen the application does not appear on the only screen, tehn GO to this section and manuallly check off the second monitor...

Many laptops have a second monitor port along the edge. On my Acer it's on the back, on my Toshiba it's at the left side. Plugging a standard monitor cable in to that port will enable you to use your laptop screen and the external monitor as separate monitors.
