Weathering is the process which breaks rocks into smaller bits. This is one type of weatheringPhysical weathering is a physical action which breaks up rocks : An example of this is called freeze-thaw weathering when water gets into tiny cracks in rocks. When the water freezes it expands, if this is repeated the crack grows and bits eventually break off.
Rocks can be broken up by them being moved in quick flowing rivers or streams. If there are other rocks in there, they may hit each other and bits will come off.

The process where bits of rock in streams get smaller and rounder is a form of erosion. The force of the water going across the rocks forms the shapes of the rocks and slowly makes them smaller.
If a rock falls into a stream or river, they can get transported (carried away). As they are moved by the water, the rock fragment knock against each other and wear away. This is called ABRASION. This bits of rock or sand in streams are called Sediment.

There are 2 main Reasons: 1. With it being in smaller bits it is a lot easier to digest. 2. With it being is smaller bits it can fit down your throat easier
