After World War 2 a large portion of the European and surrounding population was displaced and probably fed up with being invaded and blown up.Australia opened its doors for these people to start anew and to help repopulate its own decimated population. What actually occurred was that the government set up the Snowy River scheme to provide employment for this influx of migrants so in fact the people didn't come from overseas to work on the Snowy River scheme but the scheme was set up to provide work for the people from overseas.Besides which us Aussies would have complained too much about the harsh conditions.

They were often victims of poverty and displacement as a result of WW2 or lived in poverty anyway where they came from. They saw Australia as a place where they had the possibility of making a new and reasonable life for themselves and their children.

These migrants were happy to come to Australia as their own countries were suffering post-war economic depression, and Australia offered new opportunities for them.

There were two main reasons why Italian migrants came to Australia. One was for the agricultural industry, particularly the sugar cane industry of the northeastern coast. The Italians were excellent workers in this field. The other reason was that, in the 1950s, Australia's Snowy River Hydro-Electric Scheme attracted tens of thousands of overseas workers.
