Because lightning is always attracted to the highest points. Lightning rods are attached to long, insulated cables which lead down to the ground - and are anchored deep in the earth. Placing a lightning conductor at the very top of a building, almost guarantees that any strike will be conducted safely down to earth.

How do you protect buildings from lightning?

By getting it to strike something else instead. Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning Rod to do this. It diverts the lightning to the earth through a good metal conductor when placed higher than the house and planted in the earth/ground.

What do they use on building so lightning doesnt strike it?

Usally a metal rod on top of the buliding to attract the lightning

How did lightning rod improve people lives?

The lightning rod (USA), lightning conductor (UK) is a metal rod that is placed on the top of tall buildings. A metal cable or strap connects the conductor to another metal rod sunk deep into the earth. The principle is that should lightning strike the building, it is attracted to the conductor and travels down the cable to be dissipated safely into the earth - so saving the building from lightning damage. Wooden building used to burn down under stikes from lightening. The lighten rod (Ben Franklin) gives the electricity a easy path to the ground instead of a heat-producing path through wood.

What is a lightning rods how do they functions?

An example is a metal rod fixed to the top of a church steeple. The rod will protrude above the tallest point of the building. There will either be a metal strap or a thick cable connecting the rod to the ground, with the bottom end buried beneath the ground surface. The principle is that should a lightning strike occur, instead of damaging the building's structure, the lightning will strike the rod and the electricity will be directed down the strap or cable and into the earth, so saving the building from damage.

How can you create a lightning rod?

In a thunderstorm any piece of metal that is above all other objects in the sky will act as a lightning rod. ************************************* A metal lightening rod is fixed above the highest point of a building, (as in the answer above) and a metal strip or heavy cable is connected between the rod and into the earth, so directing any lightening strike to earth and safely dispersed.

What the purpose of a lightning rod?

A lighting rod is a metallic rod, which is put in place to provide a route for electric charge to travel to the ground. It is placed at the top of a high building, and connected to a wire which runs down the side of said building and connects to a ground rod, which is placed underground. The reason why these are put in place is to avoid tall buildings being struck by lightning, as this could cause high temperatures in the building or even start a fire.
