For some plants, the brown leaves slow the growing of the plant since brown leaves are basically dead leaves, but for most plants, people just cut them off because it looks more presentable that way. Usually they can live and grow with the brown leaves still there.
No it will not. But don't cut all the leaves off with the flower. Let the leaves stay on the plant until they turn yellow and wither. They're needed to produce food for the bulb to store for next year's plant.
That depends on what sort of flower! But in general, use a scissors or garden snips -or even your fingernails- to sever it without tearing the plant's stem. You want to try to cut just above a pair of leaves so new growth can happen from there.Flowers from bulbs are usually cut with as long stems as possible.
I don't know. I am about to investigate it right now my self but I've heard people say that you can submerge the plant leaves with sugar and cut about 3mm off each leaf's tip to allow glucose to travel through the veins. If the leaves are big enough to be cut 3mm a day and the glucose is renewed every now and then, the plant can survive for approx. 3 - 4 months so they say but I'm not sure.
It's okay to cut them back immediately after they are done blooming. Follow the stalk down to about an inch of the base of the plant and snip.
