King Philip of the Wampanoag Native Americans was born Metacomet, but was also known as Metacom and Pometacom. He was a Wampanoag war chief and lead his tribe in King Philip's War, an uprising against English colonists. He adopted the name Philip in 1660 along with his brother, Wamsutta, who adopted the name Alexander. Philip/Metacom wore European-style clothing in order to fit in and live in harmony with the colonists.
