The air pump can be removed any time you want on the 88, it does not effect the car so long as you don't have cats (it's even debated if it does with cats)
When I bought my 1988 the air pump had been disconnected, but not removed. I soon removed it.
It was on the passenger-side of the engine, on the bottom. There should be 1 belt running to it, which you should disconnect. Then I think there were 3 or 4 bolts holding it in.
The lines can either be removed or plugged; leaving them open will not effect operation but doesn't look as good. 3/4" rubber plugs work, I think.
Not without messing around with the files and removing its protection.
Due to the emissions control sensitivity,The idle can vary between 500 and about 2500 RPM. If you are adjusting the idle without a meter, etc. ,you want it running fairly low without stalling when it's hot. You will need to tweek it most likely when the weather changes.
Not at all.
Failure to maintain emissions equipment on your vehicle, especially by deliberately removing necessary equipment can be a violation of the law resulting in a large fine.
