He invented a device that would lift ships over shoals
Lincoln was granted a patent (no. 6469) for this, and has been the only US President, to receive a patent.
The invention was never formally applied in the construction of a boat or vessel.
Abraham Lincoln invented a method of "combining adjustable buoyant air chambers with a steam boat or other vessel for the purpose of enabling their draught of water to be readily lessened to enable them to pass over bars, or through shallow water, without discharging their cargoes..."(Lincoln).
AKA: He invented an apparatus that put air chambers under a boat to lift it higher, in order to go over a sandbar, or shallow area. It was never made industrially, and was "never applied to any vessel, so far as I ever learned." (William H. Herndon, his law partner).
Lincoln was not considered to be an inventor, but he did receive a patent for a device to lift boats over shoals. He was the only president to ever receive a patent!
