One View:Lincoln was against slavery. While it was true that he was not willing to go to war over slavery itself, that does not mean he supported slavery. Read his speeches that date back to the early 1850's in which he condemns slavery.

Another View:

Although, some may believe that he was completely for slavery, although he was against racial segregation, and did not believe in African-American slaves... But most likely, he was against it all together.

Lincoln's main objective was to preserve the Union. He knew that was not going to happen while slavery was still legal because of the north's staunch opposition on the matter. One way or another, somebody was going to have to relent. Simply put, the Union would not have survived unless the issue of states rights was delt with.

NO Lincoln fought against slavery which in return started" the War" also know as the Civil War, in the United States of Americas 1800's.
