As a child and young man he was on the poor side since his father and mother both died by the time he was 13 and he had to depend on his relatives to feed him. However, he did get some schooling and had enough connections to get some lawyers to accept him as an underling. He was licensed to practice law at age 21, did well, went West, became influential as a lawyer and judge, married into a wealthy family and was no longer poor.

As President he strove to carry out the law and serve as the chief executive officer of the nation, and to do so equally to all the citizens of the US. He did have political enemies and he gave them "as good as he got" when he had the chance, within the confines of the law. Most of his enemies were rich , so in that regard, he favored the poor. However, he was not a socialist and did not favor any sort of welfare state or federal aid to the poor. He wanted every man to have the opportunity to get rich if he could become so, by his own honest efforts. He did not favor any schemes to redistribute the wealth of the country via taxes on the rich.
