In the gospels, Pontius Pilate said that it was the practice of Roman governors in Judea to free one prisoner on the Passover. He suggested that he free Jesus, but the crowd demanded that he free Barabbas instead - so Barabbas escaped crucifixion.
This practice is entirely unknown outside the gospels themselves, although it certainly was the Jewish practice to free one sheep to take away the sins of the world, and to sacrifice another.
It has been pointed out that, while the gospels taught that Jesus was the Son of the Father, the name Barabbas also meant "Son of the father". One suggestion is that the story of Herod and Barabbas was a play on words, and that the Jews released the wrong "Son of the father". Barabbas was not crucified.

Pilate offered to release either Jesus or Barabbas assuming the crowd would respond reasonably and ask for Jesus' release. The mob chose Barabbas, and they called for Jesus to be crucified (Luke 23).

Pilates did not think that Jesus was a threat. He tried to save Jesus by using a custom of releasing one prisoner for Passover (a Jewish festival). He brought Barabbas, a criminal and told the crowd to choose between him and Jesus. The crowd demanded Barabbas to be freed and Jesus to be crucified.

The Jews are blamed for the death of Jesus because it was the Jewish religious leaders who manipulated Herod and Pilate into crucifying Jesus by charging Jesus with breaking certain Jewish laws making him worthy of death.
