In the gospels, Pontius Pilate said that it was the practice of Roman governors in Judea to free one prisoner on the Passover. He suggested that he free Jesus, but the crowd demanded that he free Barabbas instead - so Barabbas escaped crucifixion.

This practice is entirely unknown outside the gospels themselves, although it certainly was the Jewish practice to free one sheep to take away the sins of the world, and to sacrifice another.

It has been pointed out that, while the gospels taught that Jesus was the Son of the Father, the name Barabbas also meant "Son of the father". One suggestion is that the story of Herod and Barabbas was a play on words, and that the Jews released the wrong "Son of the father". Barabbas was not crucified.

Who is Pontius Pilate and Barabbas?

Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea at the time of Jesus' ministry and Barabbas was a convicted murder. Pilate offered to release either Jesus or Barabbas assuming the crowd would respond reasonably and ask for Jesus' release. The mob chose Barabbas, and they called for Jesus to be crucified (Luke 23).

What book in the Bible was Jesus whipped and beaten?

Matthew 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Mark 15:15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

Who else was on trial but saved instead of Jesus?

Jesus was not tried with other people. He went on trial alone. There were other convicted criminals who were due to be crucified at the same time as he. The one who was released was Barabbas, who was convicted for rioting. Jesus was crucified with two thieves.

What did Jesus tell barabbas he should do?

There is no record in the Bible of Jesus saying anything to Barabbas.

WHY DID PONTIUS PILATE EXECUTE JESUS?

Pontius Pilate did not want to have Jesus crucified. The Sanhedrin (a Jewish priestly court) accused Jesus of blasphemy in relation to Mosaic Law. Some of its members brought Jesus before Pilates accusing him of sedition against Rome for opposing the payment of taxes and for saying that he was a king. Pilates did not think that Jesus was a threat. He tried to save Jesus by using a custom of releasing one prisoner for Passover (a Jewish festival). He brought Barabbas, a criminal and told the crowd to choose between him and Jesus. The crowd demanded Barabbas to be freed and Jesus to be crucified.

Why do people hate the Jews when it was the Italians who killed the Rabbi Jesus?

The Jews are blamed for the death of Jesus because it was the Jewish religious leaders who manipulated Herod and Pilate into crucifying Jesus by charging Jesus with breaking certain Jewish laws making him worthy of death. The Romans would have rather released Jesus that day and crucified Barabbas. But the Jewish mobs at the behest of the Jewish leaders clamored for the release of Barabbas and the crucifixion of Jesus.

Is Barnabas in Acts with Paul the same as the one being crucified with Jesus but was set free by the Jews?

Barabbas was the one set free at the Jew's request, not Barnabas. 2 different people.

What verse in the bible talks about the scourging of Jesus?

(Mark 15:15, KJV) And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. (John 19:1, KJV) then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

Is there an account in the bible where Barabbas met Lazarus?

No, there is no account in the Bible where Barabbas and Lazarus met. Barabbas is mentioned in relation to Jesus's crucifixion and release, while Lazarus is mentioned in the story of his resurrection by Jesus. Their stories are separate and there is no mention of them meeting.

Why did the crowd call for Jesus to be crucified?

The chief priest, elders, scribes, Pharisees and the Sanherdrin all thought that Jesus was blaspheming by saying that he was the Son of God and God was his Father. Also, they were jealous that Jesus was getting so much fame and attention. Because of this, they stirred up the crowd against when Pilate asked them which prisoner he was to release for the feast of Passover (Jesus, or a revolutionary, Barabbas). The crowd therefore asked for Barabbas to be set free and Jesus to be crucified because of the Pharisees stirring the crowd against Jesus. See Matthew Chapter 27 for more detail. They were being whipped up to hysteria by thier priests and rabbis - whose motivations were less than pure.

Did Barabas go to heaven?

Not as we are led to believe about heaven and hell. His body is in the ground and his spirit is with the Father in heaven (Ecclesiastes 12:7), totally asleep and unaware of anything occurring (Ecclesiastes 9:5). It will be placed back into a new body at the call to the Judgment Process of Jesus Christ. Only Jesus has ascended back into heaven:John 3:13New International Version (NIV)13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.

Who was released so Jesus could die?
