Siddhārtha Gautama (Buddha) was actually raised Hindu in either Nepal or India. The exact location is debated. He became an ascetic Hindu monk before the experience that led him to establishing his own faith based on a middle path. This teaching spread into other parts of Asia including China.

Most Chinese are non-believers, and even when you go to a Buddhist temple, the monks you meet are 99% wage-earners or, in the case of a chief monk, a capitalist.
