A:You will find that at least 99 per cent of Christians agree that Jesus founded Christianity (an occasional variation on this is that Mary was the first Christian, but that does not negate this view).

Most New Testament scholars would probably agree, even if they believe the origins of Christianity were not really as described in the gospels. A significant minority of scholars either doubt this view or believe that Jesus could not have intended to found a new religion. Their views include:

• Jesus was an itinerant preacher in the first century, around whom myths and legends grew;
• Christianity was based on the Teacher of Righteousness mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls and who probably lived in the second century BCE.
• There were originally two quite separate religious movements active in the first century CE, which Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) calls the Jesus movement and the Christ cult. At some stage, these movements merged, to form the Christian religion we know today.
• Christianity actually began as a 'mystery' religion, much like other mystery religions that sprang up at the same time, but was unique in that it was based in Judaism, or at least became associated with Judaism.
